Tomohiro Kondo clinches JCB Classic 2007 thriller
The JCB Classic Sendai has been reborn as the JCB Classic, and the 2007 event was held from May 31 to June 3. Held at the new location of Hana-no-Mori Golf Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus, it was a fiercely fought match befitting the start of a new era.
The leaders on day two were Tetsuji Hiratsuka, chasing his second victory in two weeks, and Tomohiro Kondo. Hiratsuka maintained his fine form on day three to become the stand-alone leader, with Kondo two shots behind and tying for second place. But Kondo was matching Hiratsuka shot for shot, and on day four, at the 15th hole, he drew level on 14 under par. The deciding hole was the 16th. Hiratsuka drove his tee shot into the water on the way to a double-bogey, while Kondo sank a three-meter birdie to go three shots up. His fine come-from-behind performance earned him his first win of the season and twenty million yen in prize money.
Starting from this year, the top three finishers in the JCB Amateur Challenge, Toru Nakajima, Leo Aoyama and Taiichi Watanabe, also took part. Nakajima of Waseda University was the highest placed amateur, battling through the qualifying rounds and fighting bravely to finish level 39th place at one shot over par.
